BACKGROUND: This plant originated in Europe. It reproduces by root segments and seed. It is commonly found on disturbed sites along roadways, field edges, and excavations. It is also a widespread weed of grain fields, cultivated fields, and meadows. It grows particularly well on somewhat salinic soils.

DESCRIPTION: Hoary cress is a perennial plant, commonly 1 to 2 feet tall, with creeping rootstocks. Leaves are finely toothed. Upper leaves clasp the stem. Bloom is in late spring with clusters of white flowers, each flower containing four petals. Seed pods are heart-shaped bladders and contain two brownish seeds.

CONTROL: Biocontrol research is in the early stages. Select herbicides can offer fair to good control when applied from rosette to early bloom stages.
